Satan wants to destroy mankind. The war in heaven happened after earth was created. Revelation 12:7-9 (establishes the earth already existed) 7 And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon. The dragon and his angels waged war, 8 and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole [a]world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. - Satan was tasked to watch over and protect Gods creation (which included man).
- Jonathan Edwards contests, "Gave the angels chart of them as ministering spirits to men" Satan could not bear being subject to humans, a race below him in creation.
Why Satan fell and hates mankind
Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
- Thoughts: God gave dominion to man and Satan was jealous and rebelled.
- The creation of mankind was a triggering event that caused Satan to rebel. Up to this the point when God gave dominion over the earth, Satan was with God and in harmony.
- Until Satan was cast out, man had dominion over the earth. When Satan was cast down to the earth, he became subject (under authority) to man, a lower being than himself.
- Genesis 2:15-17 Thought: God explains what is allowed. He tells man not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. If they eat from it, they will die. This is called a "merism". A merism is a rhetorical term in which a combination of two contrasting parts of the whole refer to the whole.
The devil (Satan) takes dominion over man by contradicting the work of God and causing man to believe in a lie.
- When they at the fruit, they received a vast amount of knowledge (they understood the fullness of things like sickness/health, richer/poorer, near/far, good/evil.
- After the fruit was eaten, God put a cherubim and the flaming sword to to guard the tree of life
-- God did this because if they would have eaten from the tree of life, they would be a creature in a fallen state with vast knowledge that would live forever. Their fate would have been sealed. It was God's mercy that kept them from the Garden of Eden.
Romans 6:16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
- Thoughts: Man became a slave and debtor to Satan who he obeyed (believed) agreeing with the snake in the garden, and the very dominion that man had was transferred to Satan.
-- Satan gained dominion through deception
-- Jacob and Esau is an example of deception where Jacob, under Esau by birthright. Jacob offers Esau food for his birthright and then deceives Isaac to get the father's blessing making Jacob lord over all his brothers. The transaction made by Isaac was irreversible.
