21 Questions - 17. How do we know that Jesus was really God?

Other than the scriptures, it really comes down to faith. In the Bible, the disciple Thomas said in John 20, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.” The Bible goes on to say that 8 days later, Jesus appeared to them and Thomas was able to verify the very words he spoke. Jesus said to Thomas in John 20:29, "You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me."

This doesn't really prove that Jesus was really God but it does speak to the faith required to believe that Jesus was really God.

If we look further at the scriptures, Jesus told his disciples “I and the Father are one… Whoever has seen me has seen the Father”

Jesus demonstrated the power of God. The Bible says in Hebrews 4:15 Jesus was "tempted in every way, just as we are-yet was without sin". This could have only been done with the power of God active in His life on earth.

I believe the strongest argument for Jesus divine nature was His resurrection from the dead. He came out of the grave and appeared to hundreds of eye-witnesses. Jesus spent time with the disciples and continued to teach them and demonstrate many miracles (not written in detail in the scriptures).

When Jesus left the earth, He said the Holy Spirit would be sent to the disciples as a helper. Just as Jesus led the disciples, the Holy Spirit, whom we can't see, comes and leads us into all truth. The Holy Spirit bears witness of Himself and in relationship to God, the Father, and Jesus, the son. 1 John 5:6-7 This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify.
